The Hidden Harm We Overlook

When harm is invisible, its impact can last a lifetime

Psychological abuse is one of the most hidden and misunderstood forms of child abuse — often concealed behind everyday routines, familiar environments, and words that appear caring on the surface. Because it leaves no visible marks, it is frequently overlooked by the very systems meant to protect children, yet it quietly shapes a child’s sense of safety, identity, and self-worth.

Often beginning in the home, this form of abuse can be normalised as discipline or love, when in reality it is rooted in control, fear, manipulation, or emotional rejection. Its effects are profound and lasting, influencing development, relationships, and mental health well into adulthood — and contributing to the broader mental health challenges we see in society today.

  • When psychological abuse goes unseen, its consequences are carried for a lifetime. To change the future, we must first be willing to see what has been hidden, name what has been ignored, and act on what has been normalised for too long.
