The Absence That Leaves Lasting Scars

When a child’s needs go unseen, unmet, or unheard.

Neglect is one of the most silent yet damaging forms of child harm. It occurs when a child’s basic emotional, physical, or developmental needs are not consistently met, often within environments where the absence of care is normalised or unnoticed. Because it is defined by what is missing, it is frequently overlooked and misunderstood.

Over time, neglect can deeply affect a child’s sense of safety, belonging, and worth. The absence of stability, attention, or emotional connection can shape development, behaviour, and mental health well into adulthood — often in ways that remain unrecognised or misinterpreted.

  • Neglect is not always what happens — it is what does not. And what is missing in childhood can echo for a lifetime. Recognising absence as harm is essential to protecting children and breaking cycles that too often go unseen.
