The Harm you can not see

When words, silence, and control shape a child’s sense of self

Emotional abuse is one of the most hidden and misunderstood forms of child harm. It often occurs in everyday environments, disguised as discipline, criticism, rejection, or emotional withdrawal. Because it leaves no physical evidence, it is frequently overlooked — yet it powerfully shapes how a child sees themselves, others, and the world.

Over time, repeated patterns of humiliation, fear, manipulation, or emotional invalidation can damage self-worth, identity, and the ability to form healthy relationships. These experiences often extend far beyond childhood, influencing mental health and wellbeing throughout life.

  • Emotional abuse does not always leave visible scars — but its impact is carried for a lifetime. To protect children, we must learn to recognise the harm in words, silence, and control, not just what we can see.
